Drinks with Chado: A Tea Cocktail Fit For St. Patrick
It’s the week of St. Patrick’s Day, a day for remembering the saint that drove all of the snakes out of Ireland. Or so we’ve been told, while we don’t know if this legend has any truth to it, we do know that this is the one day where everyone claims to be a little bit Irish. While in the US it’s used as a day for partying and drinking, in Ireland it’s a little different. Having grown up with a mother from Ireland St. Patrick’s Day was always a day where we paid homage to her homeland. I have Irish ancestry on both sides of my family, but being a first generation kid my mother has always made sure to share with us her roots. We’d get ready for school and proudly pin on our St. Patrick’s Day badges, the same badges she wore as a child, sent to us by our Mam(grandmother) all the way from Ireland. We’d look forward to coming home and enjoying a home cooked Irish dinner, whether that be an Irish Fry or a hearty Irish stew with Irish brown bread. Now I’ll admit once I got older I did enjoy a bit of the US version of celebrating one of Ireland’s three patron saints(yes Ireland has more than 1 patron saint), I’ll never turn down a drink with Jameson or Baileys Irish Cream. Today we have a sweet treat of a drink using both. Combining Baileys, Jameson, and Chai this drink will leave you saying the famous Irish drinking toast, “Sláínte” otherwise known as “Health” in English.
Baileys Boozy Chai
Ingredients:
-
3 tablespoons Bailey’s Irish Cream
-
1 tablespoon Jameson Whiskey
-
3 ounces brewed Reena’s Chai
-
Raw brown sugar
-
Cinnamon stick, garnish
Directions:
- Steep a cup of Reena’s Chai and use about 2 teaspoons of the raw brown sugar. If you wish to make this a larger batch cocktail, the recipe calls for 2 teaspoons of raw brown sugar for every cup of tea made.
- In a glass Irish Coffee style mug, add in your Bailey’s Irish Cream, Jameson Whiskey, and sweetened Reena’s Chai.
- Combine together by stirring with the cinnamon stick and leave in the cup for added flavor and garnish.
- Note: this drink can be enjoyed chilled, instead of leaving the tea hot, allow the tea to chill in the fridge and serve the cocktail over ice.
